The Meaning Behind the Ashes
The tradition of marking the forehead with ashes is a powerful biblical symbol of penance and humility. While ashes appear throughout Scripture, this specific practice became a universal Church tradition in 1091, when Pope Urban II recommended it for all the faithful.
By receiving ashes, we echo the ancient practice of repenting in “sackcloth and ashes” — a physical reminder of our humble origins and our need for God’s grace. This solemn rite marks the beginning of our 40-day journey toward the joy of Easter.
As the ashes are placed on our foreheads, we hear the words:
“Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
